 Red Squirrel V

There's a story to this one.
This morning I woke at 3.45am to go to the hide in Kielder. I got there, and it was misty. Too dark for photos. So we returned home.

At 6pm we were at the hide again, and this time it was a bit lighter. As usual, I sit outside the hide instead of in so I can be on the red squirrel's eye level. Unluckily, the zoom lens wouldn't let in enough light.

I was forced to use a Sigma 105mm Macro lens for wildlife photography.

"How?" I hear you cry. Well I set in camoflauge gear a metre away from their feeding station, and waited. They turned up! Red squirrels, a metre away.

This red squirrel is half in and half out of the light, which is why half is dull and half red.

Educational Smex

This is a red squirrel. They are indigenous to the UK and other countries, but are currently endangered here because of the grey squirrel which is from America.

For those of you who don't know, these are loving creatures who do not damage things, whereas if a grey squirrel gets into your house it actually looks like it has been burgled, it destroys everything.

I find this picture absolutely adorable for some reason. The expression on the squirrels face makes me smile every time, it looks so innocent and confused!

The position you caught it in is amazing, and I think the fact that there aren't any motion lines makes this even better.

As mentioned in another critique, I think the only downside to the image is the greenish blur at the front of the picture. If you could maybe try and edit that out some how I think it would not only make the picture even better than it already is, but it would take away what I think is a big distraction on the image.

Even with the blur, it's still an amazing shot - Keep up the great work! :)

I love the way that the squirrel is half in the light, it's like it was caught in the middle of some mischief. The expression on its face is priceless, it's like it's saying "Uh-oh..." The only thing that I can really think of that I would critique on it is the green blur in front of the log under the squirrel's back feet. Is it a fern? I think it is, but the definition of the fern is lost. Perhaps that's okay, as it allows the viewer to see the entire squirrel better. The amount of time you spent planning this picture is impressive, but as you found out, you can not entirely plan for anything and everything. I also love the way that the fern on the left is somewhat in focus.
