Artist's Comments

It was dark and wet outside.
So I did an experiment! :)

This is my first shot at doing conceptual photography.

Photoshop: I darkened the blacks, made it sepia, darkened the border and used high pass. :)
Sounds a lot, but really it is not that much! :) You can do that in a darkroom really.

When I think of conceptual to me it should tell a story, I'm not sure if I'm getting that here. I don't know much about chess but correct me if I'm wrong, that is a queen and king?

I must say I love the specular lighting though, since the concept is about the end of the game, the win and the loss (which to me could be pushed conceptually) would have been better to use a blue white balance, since it's a colder colour than the warm orange.

The photograph is technically a good one, but conceptually I'd like you to push something more, they're just standing there on the board. Try a different angle, a concept of something unordinary that makes people stop and question, like maybe upside down or decorative, or a decorative board, I dunno.

Hope I have helped and haven't been too harsh, if you could explain your thought process I guess I'll have an idea of what you intended your concept to be.

ok here it is....me and u we speak the same language. i tried taking the same pic and the SAME exact settings work for me. i love the background. the color composition is just apsolutely amazing. i personally feel that the posing is really nice it gives the fealing of the thread from the queen. i love the way it looks
BUT:
1) There is some noise on the perigram of the gueen thats y it made me think u photoshoped this.
2) I think it would be more interesting if youd use a wide extension fro ur lens and give the law of 3rds a good place in ur concept. You could just point the gueen at the left 3rd and the king at the rear right end. witch i personally feel that it would make it not just 105% interesting as it is now - 110%.....
3) i would like to see more of the chess board and the colors of the chess board as they normally are instead this gives the feeling that its in a reallife mosion instead on a chessboard....it makes me feel like the reallife everyday war

I love it i wish i could fav ore than 1nce

Indeed mate! :D

Powerful image. Simply, tad cliché, but I can live with that. Needs a fav methinks.

What's cliché about it?

Chess pieces get photographed quite a lot, and when they're photographed, it's usually in a way in which one or two pieces are sharp and in the foreground, and the rest of the pieces are vague and in the background.

Then again, I tend to prefer photos that inspire me or that allow me to think in new ways. I feel this one doesn't really do that.

That said, it's a technically brilliant shot. No doubt.

 Ah okay.
I wasn't copying to be fair :giggle: I haven't seen these chess photos. I was trying to show the queen dominating the king. Lol.

Thanks nontheless

Never said you were copying. It's a new take on a known subject, and well executed.

I did the same as well for a project in my photography class a few years ago. I hadn't seen the chess piece pictures before then, and used them for a 'family as inanimate objects' assignment showing the roles of family. I had chosen Chess because it was a game my dad taught me to play when I was very young. Afterward I started seeing them everywhere, weird!

I do like your take on it though. Very dramatic :) I LOVE the depth of field and the light reflecting off of the king.
:iconultra-violet-x:
 Thank you. :) I'm glad you saw it was a king.
